Why the pound is an exact number

The avoirdupois pound has been exactly 0.45359237 kilograms since 1959. Before that, the US and the UK each had their own slightly different pound, and scientific work had to say which one it meant. The agreement fixed a single value, defined from the kilogram.

The stone is still common in the UK and Ireland for body weight, and nowhere else. It is exactly 14 pounds, so 70 kg reads as roughly 11 stone.
