Why do I need to share my location?

Because sunrise depends on where you are — the same instant is a different local time in every place, and a few hundred kilometres of latitude changes it by minutes. You do not have to: pick a city from the list instead, and nothing is asked of your browser. If you do allow it, the coordinates stay on your device; we have no server to send them to.

Are the times in my time zone?

They are in the time zone of the place you are looking at. If you use your own location, that is your zone; if you pick Tokyo, you get Tokyo's local time, because that is what someone asking about Tokyo wants.

What is the difference between the twilights?

They are three standard depths of the Sun below the horizon. Civil twilight ends when the Sun is 6° down — outdoor light is nearly gone. Nautical is 12°, when the sea horizon stops being visible. Astronomical is 18°, after which the sky is dark enough for faint stars. Near the poles in summer the deeper ones never arrive at all.

Why doesn't the earliest sunset fall on the shortest day?

Because clock time and solar time drift apart by up to sixteen minutes over the year — the equation of time, caused by Earth's elliptical orbit and axial tilt. The result is that the earliest sunset comes a week or two before the December solstice in the northern hemisphere, and the latest sunrise a week or two after.

How accurate is this?

Within about a minute between roughly 72° north and south. Beyond that the Sun grazes the horizon for hours and every method degrades — a property of the geometry, not of the code. We check against the US Naval Observatory; the tests compare seven cities across both hemispheres and both polar extremes.
