Counting seconds answers a different one — it is the clock you leave open on a second screen while the year turns, or while a launch approaches. Same date, different question, which is why this page and the days-until calculator are separate tools.
The countdown runs against your device clock, so the target is a local time: midnight on New Year in Lisbon and in São Paulo is the same wall clock and three hours apart in real time. Nothing is computed on a server, and nothing is stored — close the tab and the clock is gone.
One consequence of measuring real elapsed time rather than calendar days: on the night the clocks change, a "day" is 23 or 25 hours long. A countdown that worked in calendar days would drift by an hour twice a year. This one does not, because it counts the time that actually passes.
