Why a lunar eclipse is the same for everyone

A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon and its shadow falls on the lunar surface. Because the shadow lands on the Moon rather than on us, everyone on the night side of Earth sees the same thing at the same instant — unlike a solar eclipse, which is visible only from a narrow strip a few hundred kilometres wide.

That is why the times above are a single moment converted to your clock, and not a per-country table. What changes with your location is only whether the Moon is above your horizon at that instant, and what the local date is: an eclipse at 03:14 UTC on 3 March falls on the 3rd in Berlin and still on the 2nd in São Paulo.

Eclipses do not happen every full moon because the Moon’s orbit is tilted about five degrees to Earth’s. Most months the Moon passes above or below the shadow. Only when the full moon falls near a node — one of the two points where the orbits cross — does the shadow reach it, which is why eclipses come in seasons roughly six months apart.

What is the difference between a total, partial and penumbral eclipse?

A total eclipse puts the whole Moon in the dark inner shadow, and it turns copper red — the "blood moon". A partial puts only part of it there, so a dark bite appears. A penumbral only grazes the outer shadow: the Moon dims slightly and most people looking up would not notice.

Do I need equipment to watch one?

No. Unlike a solar eclipse, a lunar eclipse is entirely safe to look at with the naked eye, and binoculars only make it better. All you need is a clear sky and the Moon above your horizon.

How accurate are these times?

Within a minute or two. They come from the algorithm in chapter 54 of Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, and agree with the NASA eclipse catalogue to that order. Very slight penumbral eclipses — the ones nobody can see — may be missing, because the method cannot resolve them from a near miss.
