Thanksgiving 2026 in detail
In 2026, Thanksgiving falls on November 26, a Thursday.
Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November, so the date shifts within a week-long window. That is why the date moves from year to year, and why it is worth checking each year rather than assuming last year's.
Thanksgiving is a federal holiday in the United States, fixed on the fourth Thursday of November by Congress in 1941, after Franklin Roosevelt moved it a week earlier to lengthen the shopping season and about half the states refused to follow. It traces back to a 1621 harvest meal at Plymouth Colony and became a national holiday under Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Canada celebrates its own Thanksgiving on the second Monday of October.
